Volunteer Job Title: Fire Safety & Preparedness Volunteer

Program Description:
The Shake-Awake Smoke Detector Program administered by the Ocean State Center for Independent Living (OSCIL) is a special program allowing for the purchase and installation of special early warning adaptive smoke detector systems for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. The detector units work off a high frequency smoke alarm, triggering a receiver unit which then sets a vibrator (which is placed under a person’s mattress or pillow) in motion. Should there be a fire during the night; the person is “shaken” awake.
Job Description:
One or more volunteers are needed to visit the homes of individuals who qualify for the program, correctly place smoke detector units according to manufacturer’s guidelines and provide residents with a basic understanding of how the unit works and what they need to do to maintain it properly.
Volunteers would be responsible for scheduling appointments and providing feedback to the OSCIL office upon completion of installations.
Volunteers may also point out obvious fire safety hazards that they observe during their visits.
Requirement:
· A retired fire fighter or person with fire safety background would be ideal for this position.
· Individual should have their own transportation to travel statewide to the homes of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
· Previous experience working with people with disabilities helpful, but not required.
· Individual should possess good communications skills and the ability to work independently.

Hours:
Flexible, weekdays – 4 - 6 hours per week
