Adult Educator (ASL-Proficient)

Reports to: Deaf Services Program Manager

Purpose: The Adult Educator provides instruction to Deaf adults using fluent ASL and visual teaching strategies to build English reading and writing skills. This role supports literacy, communication, and independent living goals through culturally and linguistically accessible adult education.

Essential Job Functions

  • Design, implement, and evaluate curriculum and lesson plans for Deaf adult learners across varied literacy levels, using learner-centered, differentiated, and culturally responsive ASL-based instruction.

  • Integrate reading, writing, and digital literacy activities that connect to real-life goals such as employment, community engagement, and independent living.

  • Facilitate group learning sessions that build critical thinking, collaboration, self-confidence, and active participation within a respectful, supportive classroom environment. 

  • Use appropriate literacy and communication measures to assess learner skills and progress, provide regular feedback, and adjust instruction to align with individual goals and needs.

  • Maintain accurate documentation of attendance, lesson outcomes, and participant progress for program evaluation and reporting purposes.

  • Collaborate with program leadership, interpreters, Deaf professionals, and partner agencies to ensure alignment with program objectives and full language/cultural access.

  • Engage in outreach and events to raise awareness of the Deaf Adult Literacy Program and strengthen relationships with educators and community partners.

  • Contribute to ongoing program improvement by participating in staff meetings to share insights, data, and recommendations for curriculum refinement and evaluation.

  • Stay current with best practices in Deaf adult education, literacy instruction, bilingual ASL–English approaches, and educational technology through trainings and professional development.

  • Use functional materials (e.g., forms, letters, applications, online tools), technology, and online learning tools to enhance instruction.

  • Perform additional duties as needed to support the success of the Deaf Adult Literacy Program.

Education/Qualifications

  • Fluent in American Sign Language with strong understanding of Deaf culture and community

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, Deaf Studies, ASL, or a related field or equivalent experience

  • Minimum of two years of experience teaching or tutoring adults or individuals with varied literacy levels

  • Knowledge of adult learning principles including learner-centered, functional, and contextualized instruction

  • Ability to design and deliver differentiated lessons that address multiple learning levels

  • Experience with digital learning tools and accessible online technology

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a commitment to collaboration, inclusion, and lifelong learning

Performance Evaluation and Probationary Period

Performance will be reviewed at the end of the first cohort and periodically thereafter to ensure services meet the expectations of the contract.

Rate: $150.00 per hour

Hours: Part-time/10 hours per week

Location: On-Site

COTA/IL Coordinator: Home Access (Full-Time)

Reports to: Home Access Program Manager

Purpose: Complete independent living assessments, provide recommendations, and coordinate services to increase consumers’ independence in the home and community.

Essential Job Functions

  • Conduct independent living, assistive technology, and in-home assessments to identify functional needs, environmental barriers, and consumer-driven goals. 

  • Measure and evaluate consumers’ physical environments to inform recommendations.

  • Evaluate Fee-for-Service consumers and coordinate recommendations with insurers, vendors, and prescribers.

  • Research and identify cost-effective home modification solutions and assistive technology to improve accessibility and independence.

  • Coordinate the delivery and installation of assistive technology and adaptive equipment.

  • Coordinate services and procurement, including communicating with consumers, vendors, insurers, and prescribers.

  • Assemble basic equipment and devices not supplied through a specialized vendor.

  • Maintain accurate documentation, authorizations, and inventory records in compliance with organizational and funding requirements.

  • Provide consumer education, training, and public demonstrations related to assistive technology and accessibility.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members and external partners to ensure timely and effective service delivery.

  • Perform other tasks assigned by Program Manager or Executive Director.

Education/Qualifications

  • Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA)

  • Knowledge of available assistive technology/devices and home modifications available to persons with disabilities.

  • Experience addressing the needs of consumers with disabilities, including knowledge of disabilities and barriers faced by consumers in their homes and the community.

  • The ability to work independently and set priorities for task completion.

  • Organization, time management, and scheduling skills.

  • Detail-oriented and able to complete multi-step procedures.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to accurately convey the needs of consumers.

  • Ability to build professional relationships with coworkers, contractors, insurers, and vendors.

  • Basic computer proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and Outlook)

  • Manual dexterity, problem-solving skills, and ability to manipulate heavy AT equipment (weighing up to 40 lbs) for assembly and transport.

  • Possess a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle; must be willing to travel throughout Rhode Island for home visits.

  • Ability to advocate and educate consumers and professionals about OSCIL services and the Independent Living mission.

Performance Evaluation and Probationary Period

A performance evaluation will be conducted at the end of the first six months of employment (probationary period) and annually thereafter.

Rate: $26.00 per hour

Hours: 35 hours per week
