A black man with very short black hair and a latino woman with a long brown ponytail are seated on a light gray sofa in a brightly lit, comfortable room with a large set of windows in the background. They are facing each other with the woman's back to the viewer, having a conversation in sign language.

Deaf Services

Our Independent Living/Deaf Services Coordinator works one-on-one with consumers who are deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind to provide assistance in a variety of ways.

How Does OSCIL help deaf consumers?

Peer Counseling & Advocacy

We teach consumers how to advocate for themselves to meet a variety of needs, such as:

  • getting a sign language interpreter for appointments

  • accessing community services

  • requesting reasonable accommodations at work and in public places

  • addressing general communication issues

We also help consumers to obtain housing and to understand bills, letters, and important documents.

Skills Training

We help individuals to develop important skills for a successful independent life. Training is tailored to the consumer's specific needs and may include topics like:

Citizenship

We work one-on-one with consumers on how to apply for citizenship, how to study for the citizenship test and interview, and how to advocate for reasonable accommodations during the citizenship process.

OSCIL does not provide legal services regarding immigration or citizenship.

Driver Education

We assist consumers with the DMV application to take their driving test and provide tutoring on the written Driver's Education exam.

OSCIL does not provide driver training or practice operating a vehicle.

Group Workshops

OSCIL hosts monthly Lunch & Learn sessions and other workshops that cover topics such as self-advocacy, transportation, voting, healthcare access, protecting your personal information, etc.

Can I receive other OSCIL services?

Yes! In addition to the services listed above, our Deaf Services Coordinators work with other OSCIL staff to provide other services for which you are eligible.

Assistive Technology and Adaptive Devices

Assistive technology and adaptive devices enhance independence for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deaf-blind. These tools can help you overcome barriers to communication, accessing information, and being safe an aware of your environment.

Alerting Devices

Our Deaf Services program works with our Assistive Technology and Smart Home Technology programs to provide solutions that can signal alarms, ringing telephones, doorbells, and other alerts through flashing lights or haptic vibrations instead of sound.

Communication Apps and Services

We can work with you to identify solutions like live transcription apps, telephone relays, and captioned telephone services that enable you to be an active participant in conversations.
